THE GOOD: I like this radio because it's small, light weight, VERY simple to operate, and it's designed to NOT blow out your ear drums when the alarm is triggered.
THE OK BUT ANNOYING: It takes an odd number of batteries to run. 3 AAA batteries was a very poor idea to me because batteries are sold in even packs of 2, 4, 6, 8... Therefore, I buy more batteries than are needed and I will always be +/- 1 or 2 batteries.
THE BAD: This little radio is power hungry and goes through batteries FAST. From my experiences, while in "alert" mode, batteries last 2 days on the rechargeable NiMA's or 3 days on the alkaline's.
THE VERY BAD: The unit does not indicate the battery power level. So the user must check this radio every hour, they'll never truly know if it's on and ready to warn you.
Occasionally, I receive a product in exchange for an honest review. This is one of those products. I'm a Ranger for The Dyrt and I'm reviewing this through them for Midland.
This is an amazing little piece of technology. It allows you to be disconnected from reality and technology while staying safe and alert. It comes with batteries, so you don't really have to worry about it. There is a wrist strap on it, an antenna and buttons that are so simple, you can't get it wrong. You turn it on, it scans the seven pre-set stations for one that comes in well, and reports back the weather to you for the area you are in. You can hit "re-scan" if it's not clear and try again. There is a volume up and down button and also an alert feature. If you are expecting weather, but don't know when, you can set it to "alert" mode, and it'll kick in if a weather bulletin/bad weather creates an alert for your area. The station gives rainfall for the area/cities in the area, temperatures, forecasts, etc. It's on a kind of loop that updates periodically. I love that this is something I can use, just in case. Came in very handy to give others on the trail the weather when they asked "is it going to rain". I could say "no" with a smiling face!
We used this on the Appalachian Trail and I couldn't have been more pleased with how it performed. Can't wait to take it on another adventure!

Great for the price and size!
I got it on clearance at my local hardware store, but would gladly have paid full price. The reception isn't always great inside, though considering we're the most northwestern city in the US, it's more NWS's fault than anything. It is still easy to understand, works great, and the telescoping antenna is perfect and nostalgic. Overall, a very good piece of hardware.

Two radios neither worked
I bought a Midland Consumer Radio RA36451 Weather Radio Black (HH50B) from Amazon. The radio did not work. Ordered a replacement it did not work either. It is a shame that a company like Midland would sell this poor of quality merchandise. Very disappointed. Also three failed attempts to contact company via phone still waiting on response.
